Historic Area

This attractive, spacious Society Hill home, built in 1807, was completely renovated by its present owners in 1967. Today, the open, modern plan of the interior may make you forget that this historic building has given shelter to Philadelphians for two centuries. 

In 1865 the front of the property was demolished and all of the floors were raised – making the ceilings on the first floor 13 feet high. The marble steps and double doors were built in 1865 creating a grand entrance. A state-of-the art kitchen is a recent addition.  Choose queen, king or twin beds each with private bath. All rooms have TV, private phone, central A/C and individually controlled heat. Public transportation is : at the corner.

Your host is a retired stock market and futures trader. He is well versed in the history of the area. Your hostess, recently retired as Assistant Dean of a major medical school, is very active in the community. Both are supporters of a number of Philadelphia opera and theater companies and have conducted extensive research to discover the fascinating history of their home.

Bartram B&B

Historic Area

Built by Quakers in 1737, this Colonial house is located on an historic, pedestrian-only street in the heart of old-city Philadelphia near galleries, historic sites, and restaurants. The cobblestone street is the oldest residential street in the United States. People have lived and worked on this tiny street for almost 300 years! Each room in the house is beautifully simple, furnished sparsely with antiques.

 Read and sleep in quiet, calm rooms with wide board floors up original winding stairs. The Blue Room is beautiful, light, and restful. It is double bedded with a private bathroom with tub. The Red Room is off a shared library. This room, with a unique Moravian tile fireplace designed by Henry Mercer, has a bathroom with shower and queen size bed.

Because of the historic nature of the house, no pets and children are accepted. Your host is an artist who recently completed a book of photographs featuring the gardens of Tuscany. There is no TV, but there is home-made bread for breakfast.

Clinton Street is one of the prettiest streets in Philadelphia. Because there is no through traffic, it is quiet and peaceful. In the later part of the 19th century, many who were the "movers and shakers" of the city owned homes here.

The front door opens into a hallway lined with a collection of mirrors. Comfortably furnished with a queen bed, the first floor unit’s non-working fireplace adds ambience to the room. Completing the suite is a private bath and large eat-in kitchen. A working fireplace in the spacious third and fourth floor units is a special feature of the comfortable sitting area. A new king four-poster bed and antique chests comprise the sleeping area of the fourth floor unit. A Jacuzzi tub is a special feature of the third floor unit. For your convenience, there is a refrigerator and microwave oven in these units.

The kitchens are stocked for short term stays so that you can help yourself to breakfast at your convenience in the morning. Weekly and monthly rates are available. Wireless internet connection is a plus.

This 1860s townhouse is just a block from the Italian Market which offers aromas and ingredients from the old country in shops and restaurants managed by generations of the original families. Many great restaurants, fantastic bakery shops and cafes are an easy walk away. The Historic area and Convention Center are just over a mile away.

Charmingly decorated with depression era furniture, the second floor stand alone unit has a queen bed and private bath with a whirlpool tub. Quiet and private, it offers a small refrigerator, microwave and coffeepot, allowing you to enjoy breakfast in your room at your convenience. On another floor, two adjoining units each offer a queen bed and private ensuite bath as well as a mini kitchen. Two other new units are more economical as they share a hall bath. Located just blocks from the Italian Market, the suites at Urban Retreat offer a quiet respite from city living. There are four studio apartments and a single one-bedroom unit. Each spacious suite has a queen bed, sitting area, full kitchen and private bath. Several of the rooms also have space for an additional guest. Your hosts have lovingly decorated each room with vibrant color and interesting collections A mix of modern furniture with fifties-era touches gives each suite a unique decor.

The kitchens are stocked for you to help yourself to breakfast each morning at your convenience. An assortment of teas, coffee, juice, cereals, waffles and baked goods are available for you. The Avenue of the Arts is just blocks away where you will find a number of theaters and cultural venues. The Convention Center and Historic Area are also near by.

Only a few blocks long, Clinton Street is quiet and peaceful as there is no through traffic. Built in 1836, the Clinton Street B&B offers five suites. All suites have a fully equipped kitchen, ensuite bath, TV, private phone lines, and wireless internet connection.

The fourth floor Topaz Suite has a large room with a king bed and spacious sitting area with a leather hide-a-bed as well as comfortable chairs. The third floor Emerald Suite is spacious with a black marble decorative fireplace. On the second floor are three units. The Pearl Room’s long corner windows provide a delightful spot for dining. The Ruby is a large studio apartment with a black marble decorative fireplace and comfortable sitting area. With 14 foot ceilings, the Peach Room offers a king sized bed and sitting area with a queen sofa bed to sleep a third or fourth guest.

Who is Abullard? Stay at this charming B&B and you may be introduced to him. Two houses from the late 1880’s have been combined to create a unique accommodation. (Homes of that era were just one room wide and many rooms deep to circumvent property taxes levied on front footage.) The inviting living room has a grand piano which may be used for a time of chamber music while you visit.

The second floor guest room is attractively furnished with a queen bed and private attached bath. Large windows overlook the lush, large garden below. In nice weather, relax among the Gingko trees. Located just a few blocks from the Schuylkill River and the bridge to the University of Pennsylvania, Gingko Gardens is a quiet retreat in a busy city. The Convention Center and Historic Area are not far by public transportation conveniently nearby.
