Historic Area

This attractive, spacious Society Hill home, built in 1807, was completely renovated by its present owners in 1967. Today, the open, modern plan of the interior may make you forget that this historic building has given shelter to Philadelphians for two centuries. 

In 1865 the front of the property was demolished and all of the floors were raised – making the ceilings on the first floor 13 feet high. The marble steps and double doors were built in 1865 creating a grand entrance. A state-of-the art kitchen is a recent addition.  The two guest rooms have queen size beds and private, ensuite baths. The rooms have TV, private phone, central A/C, individually controlled heat. Public transportation is at the corner. A continental breakfast is available in the dining room in the mornings.

Your host is a retired stock market and futures trader. He is well versed in the history of the area. Your hostess, retired Assistant Dean of a major medical school, is very active in the community. Both are supporters of a number of Philadelphia opera and theater companies and have conducted extensive research to discover the fascinating history of their home.

This circa 1860 townhouse is located on a tiny street in the Fairmount Section of the city. A newly renovated 3 room suite on the third floor allows for complete privacy. A comfortable, sunny bedroom with a queen-size bed provides a relaxing space to sleep. The adjoining new bath has a glass stall shower. Down the hall, a cozy den lined with bookshelves, has a flatscreen t.v., a selection of DVDs, and an electric fireplace. The futon in the den is a great spot for reading or watching t.v., and it converts to a full-size bed that can accommodate an extra guest. Cable tv, Vonage phone service, and WIFI are available. The hosts have equipped another room on the floor with a small refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker. This cheery art deco inspired space has a table and chairs, and this is where your hostess sets out a continental breakfast each morning. In warmer weather you may want to head up to the rooftop deck which is accessed from a spiral staircase in this room.

Walking distance to the famous Eastern State Penitentiary, this house may have been home to a warden at one time. Today the Amante delle Arti, or Lover of the Arts, is home to a couple who love to travel. Your hostess is a writer, and she works with high schools in the Philadelphia school system. Your host is a talented artist and photographer in his spare time, and many of his pieces adorn the walls throughout the home.

The Fairmount neighborhood is walking distance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A short bus ride will take you to the Convention Center or Historic Area. The Eastern State Penitentiary is just a block away. Voted one of the 10 top haunted houses in the country, the penitentiary offers tours all year round. Close to twenty-five restaurants and shops are within a few blocks walk of this charming location.

Located on the third floor of a corner townhouse in the Fairmount section of the city is the Artist’s Nook. Just blocks from both the Art Museum and the landmark Eastern State Penitentiary, this suite is in one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the city. Home to an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops, the Fairmount section is also close to a number of museums and Boathouse Row.

The townhouse was built in 1885 and, the current owners have lived there over 25 years. Your host is an accomplished musician and photographer. Your hostess is conversant in French and is a member of the Alliance Francais which promotes the French culture. Together they have filled their home with an interesting collection of pieces by local artists. Upon arriving, you are sure to meet their resident cats.

The 3rd floor suite is a spacious and sunny space. The bedroom has a queen-size brass bed, a comfortable reading chair and a beautiful bay window that provides a view to the garden below. The adjoining kitchen area has a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven and coffee-maker as well as a glass-topped table and chairs where you can enjoy a meal. The hostess stocks the kitchen with continental breakfast items for you to help yourself each morning. The  newly renovated private hall bath features a jacuzzi tub and glass shower. The tile floor, numerous plants and fluffy towels give the room a spa-like feeling. 

The Convention Center is a pleasant 30 minute walk or short bus ride away. The Art Museum, Perelman Annex, Rodin Museum, Franklin Institute and Academy of Natural Sciences are all within a mile or less of this accommodation.

This townhouse was built in the late 1800’s and retains much of its Victorian character including beautiful, original woodwork. Your host, a florist and horticulturalist , has filled the home with antiques and collectibles.

Two spacious guest suites occupy the second and third floors of the home. The second floor suite is accented by the original built-in Victorian chestnut armoire which covers most of one wall. In addition there is a queen-size bed and sofa. The third floor suite features beautiful triple windows with stained glass, a queen-size bed and sitting area. Each air-conditioned suite includes a bright, spacious, eat-in kitchen and private bath. Self-serve continental breakfast, wireless internet, and cable television with music channels are all provided.

This townhouse is close to theaters and cultural venues such as the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Academy of Music, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, home of the famous Philadelphia Flower Show. With the Broad Street Subway less than a block away, this accommodation is also an ideal location for those heading to the Sport and Entertainment Complex. With the Italian Market just blocks away, you are within walking distance of numerous restaurants. The Philadelphia Art Museum, Independence National Park and the Philadelphia Zoo are easily accessed by public transportation and taxis.

Privacy Galore - the entire third floor of this renovated 1927 brick townhouse is available for a single person wanting lots of space and privacy, a couple, or friends who want separate rooms. The air-conditioned suite includes a large master bedroom with king bed, comfortable chairs, cable TV, desk, telephone and mini-refrigerator; a smaller room with two twin beds, desk, comfortable chair and cable TV with telephone.  A private bath is in the hall between the two rooms. Double pane windows control street noise.

The owner, a retired Banker, provides a hearty continental "plus" breakfast in the dining room. His cheerful dog can be confined to the kitchen and patio during your stay and is never permitted upstairs. Smoking is permitted in the covered garden patio adjacent to the kitchen. Wireless internet is available.

Located just one block from the bustling South Street entertainment district, it is a short walk to the downtown business district, historic area, Penn's Landing, the Convention Center and the downtown hospitals. Dozens of restaurants are within a short walk.

Bartram B&B

Historic Area

Built by Quakers in 1737, this Colonial house is located on an historic, pedestrian-only street in the heart of Old City Philadelphia near galleries, historic sites, and restaurants. The cobblestone street is the oldest residential street in the United States. People have lived and worked on this tiny street for almost 300 years! Each room in the house is beautifully simple, furnished sparsely with antiques.

 Read and sleep in quiet, calm rooms with wide board floors up original winding stairs. The Blue Room, accessed by a rear staircase, is beautiful, light, and restful. It is double bedded with a private bathroom. The Red Room, accessed by the front staircase, is off a shared library where guests can work or read. The Red Room, with a unique Moravian tile fireplace designed by Henry Mercer, has a queen size bed and a private bathroom.

Because of the historic nature of the house, no pets or children are accepted. Your hostess is a University professor and an artist who completed a book of photographs featuring the gardens of Tuscany. There is no television in the rooms; however, wireless internet is available.

Clinton Street is one of the prettiest streets in Philadelphia. Because there is no through traffic, it is quiet and peaceful. In the later part of the 19th century, many who were the "movers and shakers" of the city owned homes here. This lovely street is conveniently located just a few blocks south of the convention center.

The front door of this circa 1835 home opens into a hallway lined with a collection of mirrors.  Climb the stairs to the spacious guest suites on the third and fourth floors, perfect for guests who enjoy their privacy .  The third floor suite is comprised of two rooms; The door to the suite opens into a comfortable sitting room  with a pull-out sofa and fireplace; A king size four-poster bed beckons in the rear bedroom. A jacuzzi tub is a special feature of the private hall bath, located just outside the door to the third floor suite. The fourth floor suite is similarly spacious in size but consists of one large, open room with a sitting area and fireplace, a king-size, four-poster bed and antique chests. The private bath located outside the door to the fourth floor suite has a glass enclosed walk-in shower and double sinks.  For your convenience, there is a refrigerator, microwave oven and coffee maker  in each of these suites. For guests who need an extra bed for family or friends, there is an additional room with a queen size bed, armoire and sitting area nearest the fourth floor suite..

The kitchenette areas in the two suites are stocked with continental breakfast foods for short term stays so that guests can help themselves to breakfast at their convenience in the mornings. Weekly and monthly rates are available. Wireless internet connection is provided. Your host is fluent in French.

Located near the museums, this stately, grey stone, 1860’s Townhouse, has a unique, contemporary interior. The elegantly designed home features curved doorways, high ceilings and tall windows which fill the rooms with natural light. The walls are hung with a collection of artwork which give the main level a gallery feel.

A narrow set of stairs located off the kitchen leads guests to their private oasis. The tastefully appointed bedroom is located at the front of the house and features a comfortable king size bed, armoire, dressing table, and floral chaise. With soothing blue walls and soaring windows, the bedroom provides a calming retreat. The guest floor also includes a pleasant sitting room with a tv at the top of the stairs. Large windows overlook the spacious 2nd floor deck, which guests can access. The deck has particularly lovely nighttime views of the city. A private bath is also on the guest floor.

Your hostess is a wonderful gardener and cook. Guests enjoy a full, gourmet breakfast in the morning which is served in the dining room under the lovely glass-block skylight. If weather permits, breakfast can also be served on the outdoor deck.

The Green Street B&B is located in the charming Fairmount neighborhood. It is a short walk to the museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation (opening May 2012), the Rodin Museum and the Franklin Institute. A bus to City Hall, which is near the Convention Center, stops ½ block from the house.

New Market B&B

Historic Area

The present owner of this small, historic 1811 Philadelphia brick townhouse transformed it from an abandoned shell to a comfortable, attractive home with a modern interior which retains some beautiful features of the original structure.

Some of the nearly 200-year-old interior brick walls are still exposed. Also preserved are the original floors, doors, latches, narrow, circular wooden stairs and the butter-colored old pine paneling enclosing them. By building a small greenhouse at the rear of the ground floor, more space and light have been added.

Furnished in a contemporary style, the B&B is an interesting combination of old and new. The air-conditioned bedrooms, located on the second and third floors, are simply furnished, one with a double bed and one with a king bed that can be made up as twins if requested. Each room has an ensuite bath and basic cable TV. The wood-burning fireplace in the third floor bedroom adds a special charm to this room on a winter evening. Wireless internet connection is a plus.

The area north of Old City, Northern Liberties, has become a center for local artists and musicians. Once merely a neighborhood of row homes, this revitalized area is now interspersed with galleries and restaurants. Just a 10 minute walk from Independence Park, the area is also conveniently located for public transportation to the Convention Center as well as the University area.

Two units are available in this apartment building. The first floor studio apartment features a queen-size bed, newly renovated kitchen and loft with twin beds.

An additional first floor apartment offers a large living room as well as a spacious, bright kitchen. The lovely garden is accessed from the kitchen. The bedroom provides a queen-size bed and built in closet space.

The Northern Liberties B&B has a garden area which is accented by a lovely mural of plants. A coin-operated laundry is available in the basement of the building. For stays of less than a week, the hosts stock the kitchen with breakfast items for you to help yourself to in the morning. Weekly and monthly rates are available upon request.

Located in the heart of Old City, this fully furnished upscale loft is available for nightly, weekly or monthly rental. This is the perfect spot for family members or colleagues traveling together as the Loft sleeps 4-6. Recently renovated, the loft is over 2,000 square feet and offers the utmost luxury for the discerning traveler. Two bedrooms each with a queen-size bed and private bath flank the open living space. One bedroom has a view of Christ Church while the master bedroom overlooks the southwest skyline of the city. Off the master suite is a beautifully tiled bath with full shower and hot soak tub. A marble and tile Italian bath with full shower is off the other bedroom. A top of the line kitchen features granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, 12 foot island with built in sink and Viking gas range. The adjacent dining table seats 10. Awash in warm colors and natural light from the many windows, this apartment is spectacular both day and night. Sit at the built in desk to catch up on your work, relax in front of the 52 inch television, or admire the contemporary artwork by local artists. High speed internet, ceiling fans, central air and a washer and dryer are available.

Just steps from the Betsy Ross House, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and other Historic landmarks, this unique loft is also convenient to many art galleries and restaurants.

"The loft was absolutely incredible.  It was fully equipped with everything you could ever need from bundt pans, to bakeware, to very comfortable beds, central A/C & heating, ample closet space, backpacks (which were very handy for our day trip to NY) and two great showers.  We are huge cooks, and this made so much sense for our family.  It was worth every penny because we could be comfortable in our own loft, which was HUGE, and could prepare meals at home.   There is a premium sound system, a large tv in one of the areas, great natural lighting in the living room, a premium stove and oven, big refrigerator, and the location could not be better.   The street was extremely safe and the loft was incredibly quiet.  The owner was also in contact with us and so pleasant and accommodating.  We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip!" Society Hill Studio

Built in 1829 by Henry White, the son of the first bishop of the Episcopal Church, this magnificent property has been home to several prominent Philadelphia families. Located on Mansion Row in Society Hill, this accommodation looks out over the very streets walked by our Founding Fathers. Historic buildings give way to charming coffee shops and restaurants. Just a 15 minute walk from the Convention Center, this is the perfect spot to experience Historic Philadelphia. With the kitchen, it also is an excellent accommodation for a longer stay.

 Upon entering the building you will notice the stunning murals in the foyer. Climbing to the third floor, you will enter a sunny studio apartment. The spacious sitting area is accented by a decorative fireplace and Oriental rug. High ceilings and warm yellow walls as well as striking artwork adorn the space. Nestled in the corner of the room is an antique, four poster, full-size bed. The lovely recessed windows provide a beautiful view of the city. Custom shutters allow for privacy at night.

Your host is an independent consultant in the fields of management and leadership as well as a practicing Episcopal priest. Your hostess is a retired arts manager and amateur pianist. They are both interested in politics and the performing arts and volunteer locally. In addition, they speak enough French and Spanish to be helpful in those languages.

S.Philadelphia Serenity

Italian Market Area

Tucked on a small street near the Italian Market, this accommodation provides a comfortable and quiet retreat for travelers. The townhouse was built about 150 years ago when immigrants, most of them from Italy, flocked to the city of Philadelphia. Just a couple of blocks away, the country's oldest and largest outdoor market, from which the area gets its' name, continues to operate today. The Italian Market, while still predominantly Italian, is home to more than 100 merchants who offer a variety of foods from many cultures.
 
Your hostess has lived in the neighborhood for more than a decade, and she has lovingly updated the home and spacious back patio. The guest rooms are on the third floor. This accommodation is perfect for one, two or three guests as there are 2 rooms available. It is also ideal for families traveling with a child. The single traveler can choose to take the daybed room or both rooms if more space is desired. The larger room has a full size bed, comfy reading chair and spacious desk. The main room has a cozy daybed which is perfect for a single guest. This tranquil space, decorated in soothing shades of green, has a flat screen t.v. and a high-top table with stools where you can work on your laptop (wifi included) or eat breakfast. The suite is equipped with a coffee maker, microwave and small refrigerator as well as cups, plates and utensils. The hostess stocks the suite with a self-serve continental breakfast. The ensuite bath has a glass shower. Weather permitting, guests are welcome to enjoy the rear courtyard.
 
A little over a mile from Independence Park, this B&B is a great spot to stay when coming to see the Historic Sights. If headed to the Convention Center, a guest could walk there in about 25 minutes or take the bus. Whatever your reason for visiting Philadelphia, take time to visit the Italian Market and neighborhood restaurants. You may also want to try a cheesesteak. The famed Pat's and Geno's are just a short walk away from the South Philadelphia Serenity.

We were pleasantly surprised by our accommodations at the South Philadelphia Serenity. Efforts were made to be sure we were comfortable in both the furnishings and atmosphere.  The hostess was wonderful, offering to provide whatever we might need, but not being at all intrusive into our stay.  The location was very close to Center City and allowed us to walk into the city on the one morning we weren't traveling around.  BM
 

South Rittenhouse Flat

South Rittenhouse Square

Just a short stroll from Rittenhouse Square, this sunny, one bedroom, furnished, ground floor apartment with private entrance is convenient to both Center City and the University of Pennsylvania. The living room's large beveled glass windows provide plenty of natural light while the decorative oak blinds assure complete privacy. A newly renovated kitchen with small dining area gives guests the option of preparing meals (pots and pans are provided). The leather couch converts to a full sized sofa-bed. The additional chairs and desk can be used for reading or studying. The radiant floor heat, ceiling fans and zoned air-conditioning provide controlled temperatures throughout the apartment.

The newly renovated bath features golden travertine marble, glass block and glazed windows that separate the bath from the adjacent bedroom. A queen-size bed, two dressers and closet provide ample space for a long-term guest as well as visitors in the city for just a few days.

Your hosts, a couple with small children, live on the floors above the apartment. They have lived in Philadelphia for over ten years and love the neighborhood; they can guide you to some of their favorite restaurants and coffee shops. This accommodation is just a 20 minute walk to the Convention Center and to University of Pennsylvania. The bus stops 1/2 block away, and you can easily reach either the university, shopping or historic area with a short trip.
