1807 Townhouse

Historic Area

This attractive, spacious Society Hill home, built in 1807, was completely renovated by its present owners in 1967. Today, the open, modern plan of the interior may make you forget that this historic building has provided shelter to Philadelphians for nearly two centuries. 

In 1865 the front of the property was demolished and all of the floors were raised – making the ceilings on the first floor 13 feet high. The marble steps were built and double doors installed, creating a grand entrance. A recent addition includes a state-of-the art kitchen. Choose queen, king or twin beds each with private bath. All rooms have cable TV and a private phone.

Your host is a retired stock market trader and advisor to financial institutions and is well versed in the history of the area. Your hostess, recently retired as Assistant Dean of a major medical school, is very active in the community. Both are supporters of the Philadelphia Opera Company and have conducted extensive research to discover the fascinating history of their home.

Bartram B&B

Built by Quakers in 1737, this Colonial house is located on an historic, pedestrian-only street in the heart of old-city Philadelphia near galleries, historic sites, and restaurants. The cobblestone street is the oldest residential street in the United States. People have lived and worked on this tiny street for almost 300 years! Each room in the house is beautifully simple, furnished sparsely with antiques.

 Read and sleep in quiet, calm rooms with wide board floors up original winding stairs. The Blue Room is beautiful, light, and restful. It is double bedded with a private bathroom with tub. The Red Room is off a shared library. This room, with a unique Moravian tile fireplace designed by Henry Mercer, has a bathroom with shower and queen size bed.

Because the house is still undergoing restoration, no pets and children are accepted. Your host is an artist who recently completed a book of photographs featuring the gardens of Tuscany. There is no TV, but there is home-made bread for breakfast.

Clinton Street is one of the prettiest streets in Philadelphia. Because there is no through traffic, it is quiet and peaceful. In the later part of the 19th century, many who were the "movers and shakers" of the city owned homes here.

The front door opens into a hallway lined with a wonderful collection of mirrors. Comfortably furnished with a queen bed, the first floor unit’s non-working fireplace adds ambience to the room. Completing the suite is a private bath and large eat-in kitchen. A working fireplace in the spacious third and fourth floor units is a special feature of the comfortable sitting area. Only a few blocks long, Clinton Street is quiet and peaceful as there is no through traffic. Built in 1836, the Clinton Street B&B offers five suites. All suites have a fully equipped kitchen, ensuite bath, TV, private phone lines, and wireless internet connection.

The fourth floor Topaz Suite has a large room with a king bed and spacious sitting area with a leather hide-a-bed as well as comfortable chairs. The third floor Emerald Suite is spacious with a black marble decorative fireplace. On the second floor are three units. The Pearl Room’s long corner windows provide a delightful spot for dining. The Ruby is a large studio apartment with a black marble decorative fireplace and comfortable sitting area. With 14 foot ceilings, the Peach Room offers a king sized bed and sitting area with a queen sofa bed to sleep a third or fourth guest.

Colonial Garden

This charming circa 1750 B&B offers a respite from the hustle and bustle. Three charming colonial houses have been combined to make a unique inn. The buildings are historically certified and have been left as intact as possible, lending each of the guest rooms a distinct character very reflective of Philadelphia in colonial times. 

The Cotswold Room's garden-like flavor, the Quilt Room, decorated in colonial style and the Rose Room are on the ground floor.  There is a tight winder staircase leading to your accommodations on the second floor - the Blue Room, the adjacent Stencil and Green Rooms, the Southwest Room, and the Four-poster Room with its queen-size antique bed. On the third floor, the Dormer Room, nestled under the eaves, also has a small sitting area. 

The B&B features a large walled garden where you can enjoy breakfast, weather permitting. In the winter, relax in front of the cozy fire in the living room. Help yourself to tea or wine and cheese in the late afternoon.

Who is Abullard? Stay at this charming B&B and you may be introduced to him. Two houses from the 1880’s have been combined to create a unique accommodation. (Homes of that era were just one room wide and many rooms deep to circumvent property taxes levied on front footage.) Green Street B&B

This 1860 Federalist townhouse was purchased and lovingly restored by the hosts. The host's interest in history and the hostess' background in home economics have served them well in their efforts to maintain the original character of the home. 

A deck and a more contemporary family room were added. Last to be completed was the spacious garden that parallels the entire length of the home. The parlor deserves special attention. The beautifully restored plaster molding, ceiling medallion and the magnificent gold leaf chandelier imported from Ireland, serve as elegant backdrops for the Victorian furnishings. Another "don't miss" is the bay of the dining room (added in 1901) with its leaded windows. The guest room on the third floor is attractively furnished with a double bed and large private attached bath.

Nearby public transportation will take you to any area of the city. There is limited street parking. However, should that not be available there are neighborhood parking lots available for a fee.

New Market B&B

The present owner of this small, historic 1811 Philadelphia brick townhouse transformed it from an abandoned shell to a comfortable, attractive home with a modern interior which retains some beautiful features of the original structure.

Some of the nearly 200-year-old interior brick walls are still exposed. Also preserved are the original floors, doors, latches, narrow, circular wooden stairs and the butter-colored old pine paneling enclosing them. By building a small greenhouse at the rear of the ground floor, more space and light have been added.

Furnished in a contemporary style, the B&B is an interesting combination of old and new. The air-conditioned bedrooms, located on the second and third floors, are simply furnished, one with a double bed and one with a king bed that can be made up as twins if requested. Each room has an ensuite bath and basic cable TV. The wood-burning fireplace in the third floor bedroom adds a special charm to this room on a winter evening. Wireless internet connection is a plus.

Built in 1965, this townhouse is located in Antique Row, surrounded by 150-200 year-old buildings. Nestled among antique shops and a variety of gift shops and restaurants, Pine Street Simplicity is centrally located and convenient to almost any part of Center City. It is an easy walk to the convention center, historic area, the Academy of Music, theaters, attractions of South Street and local hospitals.

While modest in size, it seems spacious for a city house and is decorated in a clean and simple contemporary style. The guest quarters occupy the entire third floor, offering a double bed, private bath, air conditioning, ceiling fan and TV. Sliding glass doors provide a light filled room and open onto a small outdoor deck with a wonderful city skyline view where in nice weather you can relax after a busy day.

Your hostess is a retired child psychologist who has enjoyed hosting guests from all over the world for over fifteen years. Complimentary indoor parking is available.

Seventh Street B&B

Privacy Galore - the entire third floor of this renovated 1927 brick townhouse is available for a single person wanting lots of space and privacy, a couple, or friends who want separate rooms. The air-conditioned suite includes a large master bedroom with king bed, comfortable chairs, cable TV, desk, telephone and mini-refrigerator; a smaller room with twin bed, desk, comfortable chair and cable TV with telephone. A private bath is in the hall between the two rooms. For extra guests, the second floor king bedded room with an “almost private bath” is available. Double pane windows control street noise.

The owner, a retired Banker, provides a hearty continental "plus" breakfast in the dining room. His cheerful Cocker Spaniel can be confined to the kitchen and patio during your stay and is never permitted upstairs. Smoking is permitted in the covered garden patio adjacent to the kitchen.

Located just one block from the bustling South Street entertainment district, it is a short walk to the downtown business district, historic area, Penns Landing, the Convention Center and the downtown hospitals. Dozens of restaurants are within a short walk.

Enjoy living as wealthy Philadelphians did in the mid-1800s on one of the prettiest streets in the city. Tree-lined, quiet, friendly are just a few adjectives that describe Clinton Street. One of the special features of your B&B, built in 1856 by Ballinger, is a magnificent stairway that goes to the roof of the house. Your host, who is a collector, has furnished her home with many of her treasures. 

The five bedrooms are furnished with antiques, but have modern amenities. Choose a room with a queen, standard or twin beds. The rooms share three hall baths. It is possible to reserve a room with a private hall bath subject to availability.

Within a few blocks of the Convention Center and the Historic District as well as South Street with its shops and restaurants, Washington Square B&B is centrally located. It is also within walking distance of the major hospitals in center city. Public transportation is nearby for those who prefer.
