The Carriage House

University City

An oasis in the heart of University City best describes this carriage house that has been completely renovated.  Originally a turntable on the first floor helped position carriages to be sent upstairs via an elevator.  It served as the children’s summer playhouse for the Slattery family in 1916.

Redesigned as a home in 1967, it has retained the original beamed and tongue-in-groove ceilings.  The hosts have decorated to suggest an earlier era using Mission-Style furniture and handcrafted decorations.  In winter enjoy a wood fire in the Franklin stove; in summer, walk through the glass doors to the porch.

A complete kitchen, breakfast room, powder room, dining room, and living room are on the first floor.   On the second floor there is a sitting area at the top of the stairs with a desk and easy chairs.  There are two bedrooms, one has a king bed and the other has a double bed.  Each has been attractively decorated with the host’s treasures.  A bath completes this floor.   Weekly and monthly rates are available. Driveway parking is available for a fee.

GUEST COMMENTS

“The Carriage House is wonderful. We were able to have a dinner party for our daughter to celebrate her graduation. The parents of her friends were just amazed when they arrived. They couldn't get over how beautiful and spacious the accommodations were, while they were all stuck in hotel rooms. The location is also great. The lovely hostess and the folks at the Bed & Breakfast Connections were so nice to deal with. I highly recommend the Carriage House.” MM

GUEST COMMENTS

“Our accommodation was excellent: comfortable, with an excellent range of choice for continental breakfast and everything we needed was available. Our hostess even acted as our driver when the expected taxi failed to arrive.” DM

“Our stay was wonderful.  The building is an absolute delight; clearly a gracious home. The “Round Room” is spacious, and very, very comfortable. Each morning our hostess put out a lovely selection of breads and pastries, along with fresh coffee, milk, orange juice, and teas. The B&B is located near a trolley line, and close to U. Penn. The room and bathroom were clean, and tidied up each day. The hostess and her husband were gracious and welcoming. I will definitely stay there again.” ET
